Short Summary of Short Summary of Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life.
The English author Mary Anne Evans, also known as George Eliot, is the author of the book Middlemarch. In 1871 and 1872, it was first published in eight instalments. It explores various, intersecting stories with a large cast of characters and is set in 1829 to 1832 in the fictional English Midland town of Middlemarch.
When Dorothea decides to wed Edward Casaubon, a haughty professor who is several years her elder, she commits a grave error in judgment. Dorothea is an intellectual and sincere woman. Dorothea wants to work with him directly, but he only wants her to be a secretary.
Self-determination and chance are not antagonistic elements in Middlemarch; rather, they are a delicate balance. Things go wrong when characters rigidly uphold a belief in either chance or self-determination.
The status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education are just a few of the topics that are discussed in this book
