Sentences Simple and Compound English Grammar Lesson

  1. A simple sentence,

consists of a single independent clause. An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and can stand alone as a complete thought. Example: The cat slept on the couch.

  2. A compound sentence,

consists of two or more independent clauses that are connected by a conjunction (e.g., and, but, or). Example: The cat slept on the couch, and the dog chased its tail.

Practical uses:

  • Simple sentences can be used to convey a single, clear idea.
  • Compound sentences can be used to connect related ideas and add variety to your writing.

Special cases:

  • A complex sentence consists of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete thought and must be combined with an independent clause to form a complete sentence. Example: Although the cat slept on the couch, the dog chased its tail.
