Verb tenses in English Language for Beginners with Comprehension exercises

Verb tenses indicate the time at which an action is taking place. In English, there are three main verb tenses: past, present, and future.

The past tense

refers to actions that have already happened. It is formed using the past simple form of the verb, which is usually created by adding -ed to regular verbs or by using the second form of irregular verbs. For example:

  • She walked to the store. (past simple)
  • He ate a sandwich. (past simple)

The present tense

refers to actions that are happening now. It is formed using the present simple form of the verb, which is usually created by using the base form of the verb. For example:

  • She walks to the store. (present simple)
  • He eats a sandwich. (present simple)

The future tense

refers to actions that will happen in the future. It is formed using the future simple form of the verb, which is usually created using the auxiliary verb "will" or "shall" plus the base form of the verb. For example:

  • She will walk to the store. (future simple)
  • He will eat a sandwich. (future simple)

There are also many other verb tenses in English, including the continuous tenses (present continuous, past continuous, and future continuous) and the perfect tenses (present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect). These tenses are formed using auxiliary verbs and the base form or -ing form of the verb.
